bring cards. bring a pad of paper and pencil and play hangman...my kids age 12 and 14 like playing that on the plane. Also, if you have a portable DVD player, bring that. another thing...does she like puzzles like crossword puzzles or Sudoku. Both are great time-passers. We also play "tell me a story about where that person is going"...and one of us starts it and the other must finish it, like "she is going to meet her long lost boyfriend who she hasn't seen since high school 20 years ago and that's why she looks so nervous"....
Also.....bring gum and a dry snack.

You didn't mention how long the flight is. Generally speaking, when we go on vacation our flights have been mostly 2-3 hours long. By the time we get up in the air, they serve the drinks (and I provide a snack), and we get cleaned up, there is only about an hour left to kill. We play 20 questions, or we play "I Spy" a ton. My son often brings his iPod or his gameboy. We bring a deck of cards since there are lots of games we can play, but you need to get special cards that don't slide around cause the first time we brought a new deck and they kept sliding off the trays LOL! We also bring travel size games - TOYSRUS sells a million of them in the board game department. Finally, we LOVE playing tic-tac-toe, hangman, and connect the dots. These all just require pencil and paper. I personally don't carry books or coloring stuff cause my son just isn't interested in that - but if your child is, then that would be great too. I just make sure there is a SMALL variety that we can carry easily, and my son carries his own special carry-on bag with the fun stuff in it. Best of luck - happy travels!!!

Gather a small box of photos. Bring a pen and a stack of sticky notes (Post-It Notes). You can go through the photos together. Make notes on the sticky notes and place the corresponding note on the correct photo. You can note who is in the photo, when it happened, what was happening, how she felt, etc. Encourage her to use her own words. Put the photos in chronological order. Keep the photos in the small box you brought, rubber banded. Then you can tuck them into your carry-on luggage. When you're home from your trip, the photos are all ready to be placed into a scrapbook! All your journaling and memories are already documented. You can put them in the album easily because you're already placed them in order. Your daughter will feel very important. It is a great tween activity. The scrapbook will be meaningful for generations to come. Plus it is perfect for the plane because it's compact and you don't need much space for them. All you need is time, which you will have plenty of on the plane!

how long is the flight? luckily at 12 she can probably entertain herself.
watching the movie takes up a lot of time so i suggest that first.
you may want to get some puzzle books:
soduko, easy crossword puzzles, word search
notepad to play:
hangman, tic-tac-toe, connect the dot square game
word games:
name game with celebrities so first person picks a celebrity and then other person has to name someone whose FIRST name starts with the same letter as the first celebrities LAST name...ex:
Mom: Tom Cruise Daughter: Chad Lowe Mom: Larry David Daugther: Dane Cook
Alphabet Games: Go down the alaphabet and see who can name the most of something with the letter G
I spy with my little eye...
Card Games: Crazy Eights
Take along books, CDs to listen to, snacks to snack on, handheld games, preteen magazines...
Have a great trip! SD

Does she like playing cards? Games like "war" or "go fish" or "crazy eights" are great games you could play that could be played on those little tray tables. You could also play "20 questions," where she thinks of an animal, mineral or plant and you have 20 questions to guess what it is. Enjoy your trip!!

Reading ... puzzles ... coloring ... a Gameboy is good ... maybe you have one of those personal DVD players so she can watch a movie ... or just running up and down the isles screaming, every now and then, can be fun for both of you!
