I'm a nurse. If you are serious about calming your nerves, try listening to smooth jazz or very slow music. It slows your heart rate and in turn calms your nerves. It gives you the happy place effect. But deep breathing is usually done slowly, and yes it also works. How I'm glad you asked, you see by the time you use all the energy breathing and concentrating on the breathing, you have took your mind off the nervous situation and redirected the focus on the breathing. Putting all your energy there. And there are no silly questions.

In a couple of ways. First of all, it requires focus, so your attention is taken from the stressor and turned towards deep breathing. Secondly, it sends the message to your brain that you are calm and OK. (I am not making this stuff up, I was in a partial hospitalization program where they taught us how to do this and why it helps.)
The best technique I have found is inhaling to the count of 6, holding for the count of 4 and exhaling for the count of 8. For some reason (and overlooked by most people..including me before the program) the exhalation is really important.

It does many things at the same time. The extra oxygen means the heart doesn't have to pump so fast to bring in more oxygen. If your fight-or-flight response got triggered then you start breathing quickly in preparation; sometimes this leads to a panic attack. Deep breathing slows down this reaction and gives you the chance to see if it is necessary. With the extra oxygen you can think more clearly and if you have to fight or fly, you still can.

The air flowing in and out is also soothing and you use more muscles to get that air in and out. It's also enough of a distraction to remind you of your choices.

For me, it calms me down because I am concentrating on my breathing and not what is making me nervous. I am focusing on me. When I do that, it does slow my heart rate down when I slowly breath out. Try it. It is amazing how it really works. You breathe slowly in through your nose, and when you breathe out slowly through your mouth, breathe out longer than when you breathed in. (You breathe out like you were blowing out a candle, but make sure it much slower and controlled.) It lowers your heart rate and that puts you more in tune with your body. Not a silly question at all. You learn more when you ask.

It is supposed to but only if done properly. Ask a doctor, nurse, p.a. or anyone who teaches exercise to teach you the proper way.

If that does not help, see your doctor for an anti-anxiety medication.
