in general, canon has excellent point-and-shoot cameras. nikon, on the other hand, is clearly the leader in DSLR.

Which is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus? Nikon or Canon? These are all unanswerable questions as they are all "the best" in their class, depending who you ask.
If you have no personal preference, perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.
If you want to get into model-by-model comparisons, we can do that, too. I'm a Nikon fan and prefer their line at almost every price point, but I also admit that the Canon is better for some people - if they really know what they are looking for.

Both are great cameras. Don't spend too much time dwelling on this, the differences aren't worth it.
Go with either and you will be happy. If you turn into a professional photographer- that is when you will start making distinctions between the two, depending on your specialty.
If you are familier with Canon, stick with Canon and vice versa. Many of the functions and settings are the same between cameras in a brand so you will have less to learn when upgrading.

Personally I would purchase the Canon for evereyday use. If you are a professional photographer and want a didgital SLR camera get the Nikon, otherwise get the canon because it is slightly cheaper and they are both great cameras
