The Crider plant is operating at about 450 employees — less than half its preraid level of 1,000, company president David Purtle said.
The company raised starting wages by about 40 cents and now offers attendance bonuses to new hires. Before, it took a year to be eligible for the extra pay. (Starting base pay is $6 an hour; most workers earn more through bonuses and overtime.)
Purtle said about 50 percent of applicants since the raids either did not pass the drug test or reference checks. Many of those who did have poor attendance or quit quickly
"Our challenge is — in hiring unskilled people — their ability to understand what's expected of them," Purtle said. "Attendance is important. No acting up, no mouthing off. They just haven't learned."

This is unskilled labor. It does not need to pay more than $6 or $6.50/hour. People do not deserve a raise just because they think the salary is too low. If you don't like the salary, then go get an education or learn a skilled trade. Do not expect high wages from unskilled labor.
This is a classic example of why we need reform in our Immigration laws. I believe that people need to come to the US legally and not try to get around the laws BUT I also believe our current laws make it too expensive, too difficult and too lengthy a process to come here legally. The attorney's fees alone are five or six times the annual household income in the Dominican Republic or other countries.
Make LEGAL immigration attainable.
(By the way, if they raise the salary at the chicken plant, you do know that the price of chicken is going to go up and you, the shopper, is going to be the one paying more, right?)

The problem is the company itself. I know for a fact, that the meat industry could pay more, Especially when they brag about the thousands of dollars per minute that they make.
I also understand that the quality of employee is dependent on the wage they are paid.
Six bucks an hour for long, grueling hours, dangerous working conditions and physically demanding work. This is not only ridiculous but immoral.
The employment of illegals is only another symptom of this arrogant and money hungry attitude.

Few would call it a dream job. But the position of slaughterer at the Swift & Co. plant in Greeley, Colo., was drawing some interest last week after the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency created some openings.
The Rocky Mountain News observed that the line of applicants "was out the door" at the county employment office. One of them, Derrick Stegall, said two of his friends had been taken away in the immigration raid and he "felt compelled to fill their rubber boots," as the paper put it.
Another was Nathan Korgen, a former construction worker looking for a Swift job in production or fabrication. Referring to reports that illegals with families had been rounded up and separated from their children, he said, "I feel bad for the kids, but good for me."
Meanwhile in Nebraska, union officials said Tuesday that 40 to 50 workers had been hired at the Grand Island plant, one of six Swift plants raided by the ICE in a sweep that led to nearly 1,300 arrests.

And funny thing -- they say Swift has been improving its wages, benefits and bonuses since before the raids.

Wow... So many selfish people out there... It's bad enough that so many people think that a living can be made at $6 an hour, but then to treat people who are trying to do honest work as automatic drunks and criminals is just disgusting.
Minimum wage should be at least $8 an hour, and there should be government guaranteed health care for everyone.

I live approximately 6 hrs from this plant.
I can...if I want to...go to work at my local meat processing plant...as a JANITOR starting @ $14.50 an hr, with health care benefits and a 401K.
The people that own the plant in your posted article..are nothing more than leeches. They can complain about qualified help. But the truth is, they are paying way way below market scale. They should go out of business.

Gee whiz. Maybe they have to raise wages MORE than forty cents!
Mind you, I'm glad our felons and homeless are at least getting a chance at a job. Many of the latter can't hold jobs because the reason they are homeless is due to mental problems. However, there is no chance of getting rehabilitated without the possibility of a job.
--
um, folks, I am not characterizing these workers as homeless or felons, and I never mentioned 'drunks'. The article says the employer pitched the job vacancies to homeless and felons and now is having staffing issues. An alternative way to go might have been to raise wages higher, is all I am saying.

Americans aren't GIVEN the social services that illegal aliens are given - paid for by middle-class Americans! If an American had free medical, food, housing and school breakfast, lunches, clothing & supplies, no insurance, no taxes and on & on we could all work for $6.00 per hour but instead we all have to work overtime to keep ourselves & pay for the illegal aliens! We don't have a choice our government takes your part of my money before I get it!

The reason is very simple, those(citizens) that are not educated in the United States of America that will work for those wages are usually drunks, drug addicts, or have problems taking orders for $6.00/ hr. Is that a plant that was raided by the INS? If so when we can't get what ever they manufacture than I do not want to hear these people crying that they can not get what they want or need!
And to the people that say 6.00 is too low for this type of job, let me tell you if you make $14.00 an HR. how will you afford the things that are manufactured there? They will raise prices so high you will be in big trouble!

According to the OBAMA Administration, the Bush Recession ended in May 2009, even before the Obama stimulus started. What we have is THE most anemic recovery in history, brought about directly because of Obamanomics, and his whole domestic agenda that is overtly hostile toward American business and employers. This is what happens when you over-regulated, credit strangulate, eco-litigate, and threaten new, higher forms of taxate on business...it simply doesn't expand and create new jobs.
