Projection TV's come in two flavors: DLP and LCD.

Both types have a projection lamp that will need to get replaced between 3,000-10,000 hours. They cost around $300-$600 per a lamp. High maintenance cost compared to flat panel technology. When I say flat panel technologies, I am talking about LCD and plasma TV's.

The purpose of projection TV's is to get a large image at a low cost. If you look at the prices of flat panel vs projection TV's, as the screen size gets larger, the descrepancy in prices grow.

The only real advantage of projection TV's is the large image for the low cost. The two disadvantages are the expensive lamps and the narrow viewing angle. When I say narrow viewing angle, I mean that you have to stand practically in the center or near center of the screen to see the bright image. If you stand off the center, the image gets dimmer and unclear. This is where the LCD and plasma TV's come in. They have nearly a 180 degree viewing angle.

If you want a 55" image or larger, then go for a projection TV. If you want a smaller screen, then you pick a flat panel.

If you want a projection TV, DLP's are the way to go. You get the best color output and no motion blur. If you want a flat panel, then pick plasma. The technology is optimal for movies and gaming, where LCD is much better for computers and maybe sports.
