There are a few questions you have to ask yourself before getting a definate answer. There is a good way to see if you MUST file a US Individual Income Tax Return. Some require you to file a return. If any of the following situations have occured in the year of 2006 then you MUST file a tax return. It does NOT mean that you will owe a tax - only when you figure your return will you have the answer to that question.
1. If you received ADVANCED EARNED INCOME CREDIT at any time during the year of 2006 while working.
2. You sold your home or any property that fell under capital gains tax taxes.
3. You are under a previous requirement to file through an agreement with the Internal Revenue Service as a result of past due taxes.
4. Yew owe any other taxes from special situations.
5. You have more than $400 in self-employment income from a business.
6. You are required to file a tax return from a court order in any case.
There are other situations that make an AUTOMATIC requirement to file. To learn more go to www.ustreas.gov and click on the link that says "IRS tax forms" and download the instructions for form 1040 when it is available online and start at "Am I required to file a return". Further assistance can be found there to help you determine what form to use, and other helpful information.
The Internal Revenue Service can help by calling 1-800-829-1040 (1-800-TAX-1040).
Your state may have a different filing requirement and you should also check with your state - California - to see if you are required to file.

At 6.75 an hour for 4-5 months, you probably didn't make enough to be required to file. For 2006, a single person can make $8450 before they are required to file.
If you're a dependent, then you have to file if you made over $600. But if you made less than $5150, you would probably not owe any tax.
If anything was deducted for federal withholding, you should file anyway, even if you're not required to, since if you file your withholding will be refunded to you - if you don't file, you don't get it back.

Your employer will issue you a W-2 showing what federal and state income tax has been withheld. Be sure to let your employer know where to mail it.
If you earned about $6.75 an hour for 5 months full-time work, you owe little or no state and federal income tax. So be sure to file both state and federal returns to get your refunds.

If a person earned $8600 in wages (W2) and had taxes withheld then you should file a tax return to get the withholding refunded. If a person earned $8600 in self employed (Form 1099) then yes you are liable to file a tax return Form 1040, Sch C and Sch SE. good luck

by working only 4-5 months with $ 6.75 / hour, i dont think you will end up owing money. You can file tax as soon as you receive your W-2 from your previous employer.

If someone else claims you as a dependent, you have to file if you make over $ 6400.
IF no one else is claiming you:
If you are single and make under $8450 you are not required to file a return. Married filing jointly, you are not required to file if you make under 16,900.
If your income is too low to REQUIRE filing you can still file a return if you have tax withheld and want it refunded.
