According to their agreement with VISA and Mastercard, a merchant cannot require identification when making a credit card purchase. However because the guideline manuals surrounding merchant processing rules are so thick, many merchants do not take the time to read everything, and are simply unaware. Your best bet is to advise the person requesting identification that you are not required to provide identification per their merchant agreement with VISA/Mastercard, and ask that they call the issuing bank of your credit card. Your credit card company will be able to verify your identity as long as you know the account holder's mother's maiden name/password, or last 4 of her ssn and you are an authorized user. If the merchant refuses to call the credit card company, then you call the credit card company and they will be able to file a complaing against the merchant with either VISA or Mastercard. Hope that helps!

If you have said ask for id on the back of credit card the clerks will ask you for an ID if you have signed the will match your signature. So to avoid being asked for an Id sign at the back of your credit card.

More and more stores are asking for picture ID when you use a credit card. Not sure if they are looking for state issued id or not, but I wouldn't worry about it.

No one ever ask me for ID. I actually find it a bit unsettling. Still a picture ID, even from school should be enough.
