Hi guys. I've been buying instant oatmeal packets from the store for many years now, and it occurred to me that it shouldn't be too hard to make these packs at home.

Do you any of you currently make your own instant oatmeal? Recipes would be appreciated, especially for brown sugar and maple flavor. Any other helpful tips would also be great.

Thanks in advance.

donna, do I put in the syrup with the rest of the dry ingredients, or after I've hydrated everything? Thanks for the answers everyone.

Where can I get this crystalized maple syrup? I don't think I've run across it at the grocery store.

If you need to make it up beforehand and put it into little packets, you would only use dry ingredients, of course.
I make oatmeal nearly every day for my family (buy it in 25 pound bags--organic--- for cheap) since they'd get really bored with it, I add different stuff each day. Its just about as fast to add whatever you want while it cooks as it is to premix it and store it.
Here are some of the things I add as it cooks or when it is done:
bananas and honey
cinnamon and apples and brown sugar
maple syrup and walnuts
chopped almonds and honey
any fruit in season--- liike blueberries, peaches, etc. with sugar or honey
frozen or dried fruit when fresh is not around
choppped dates or figs

These aren't exactly recipes, as I add them to taste.

If you really want to package it, put about a cup of instant oatmeal into a Ziplock. Add about 1/8 tsp. salt, a couple tsp. sweetener of choice (sugar, crystalized maple syrup, brown sugar) and whatever nut or dried fruit you'd like in the quantity you like. Zip it up and later pour into 2 cups boiling water.
makes a good sized bowl.

I have done this. I just make regular oatmeal and add 2 teaspoons brown sugar and some raisins. Or for the maple, just a squirt of pancake syrup, maple flavored.

2nd Answer: After it is cooked, I just squirt the pancake syrup on and stir. It also helps to cool it enough to eat.

We don't use the instant---we use the big packages of "quick" oats. Store brand, or Quaker, either is fine. It takes only a minute in the microwave to make a serving---directions are on the side of the package. As others have suggested, just add brown sugar to taste, and raisins and cinnamon as you wish.
Another quick, creamy fix is: After the oatmeal is cooked, stir in flavored yogurt, or use plain yogurt and add fresh fruit, or jam.
We love oatmeal to start the day---nourishing, quick, and excellent to promote good digestion and to lower cholesterol naturally!

I used to make my own, but I don't have the recipe in front of me. You put some quick oats (from the box) into the blender and blend it into powder. Put about 1/8 cup of the powder in a ziplock bag and add about another 1/4 cup of whole quick oats. Then you add some nonfat dry milk, dried fruit, sugar, brown sugar, whatever you want. It works very well. You might have to experiment a little bit to get it right, but it's a big money saver and tastes better to me.
