The airlines almost never upgrade people for no reason anymore. Back in the day, a nice smile or a few charming words could maybe get your upgrade.. not true anymore.

There are a few options to better your chances though.

1. Get a frequent flyer number for an airline that you think you will travel most. If you fly that airline enough, you will reach a ceratin status with theyairline where they will upgrade if seats are available.

2. Certain airlines will allow you to purchase upgrades at the aiport for like 100/200 dollars if seats are available.

3. Sit towards the front of the coach cabin. It is not unheard of for flight attendents to allow people to move up if the first class cabin is empty. Typically they will bump the people sitting towards the front of the coach cabin. I have seen that happen before.

Those are your best options.

It does not happen that much any more unless you are a frequent traveller. It never hurts to ask, but I would not get my hopes up! I've flown over 50,000 miles this year on the same airline and sometimes I don't even get upgraded.

See if you can be the last to get onto the plane, and maybe they have overbooked in coach.
