The two rarely see each other...so rarely that the step brother didn't know that he was no longer with a fiance that he had dated a year ago. Normaly I wouldn't think of it but they have only been step brothers (so no blood relation) for a few years. I do feel awkward but I am not sure if it is because of the technicality of if I actually have something to feel guilty about. I am a honest person and I know the step brother outside of the relationship with my ex, whom I dated very seriously many years ago.

I see no reason why you can't. How upset would your ex be? But, it's your life and your ex shouldn't enter into it.

i could say this is something which you will take care of as 'somewhat unusual' yet no longer a important issue. Act and think of that way. exceptionally lots you could say 'our mothers and fathers have been married to one yet another for 2 years...till now'. You and him are no longer appropriate...you probably did no longer extremely strengthen up collectively....you met up way later in existence. So attempt and luxuriate in a good courting...and it that works...who cares the type you met. BC
