it is natural for a macaws beak to flake when it grows. Beak conditioners will help keep the sensitive beak healthy and prevent bacterial growth under the flakes.

However, if it looks mangled, there is a good chance that this bird is a special needs bird. I'm not saying don't get it if you like it, but be aware that this bird may need help eating, may be messier than normal, may have other issues both behavioral and medical, may have a shorter life span, and could cost a lot of money if the condition gets worse.

Call you closest avian certified vet and describe the beak. They should be able to give you an idea of the worst case scenario and the care and expense of taking care of the bird.

Every bird is special and they all deserve a loving home...just make sure that you are able to help a bird that needs more than others.

Parrot beaks grow like people fingernails meaning that they are constantly growing and there is no outer shell per se though some flaking can occur. Personally, I have a blue and gold that has a mild case of "scissor beak." This means that when you look at her head on you can tell that her upper mandible is not lined up with her lower one. This makes her beak curved to one side. Now with some birds this may be correctable over time by a series of beak trimmings and/or surgery. Other times there is nothing that can be done except periodic trimming. I know that with ours we take her to the vet every couple of months to bring her beak back into better alignment though for each bird, like people, the case may be different. I would definitely suggest seeking the opinion of a vet who is an avian specialist before you commit yourself the care of this bird.

What do you mean my "bad"? Is it over grown? Flaky? Crooked? Injured?

I've seen a number of birds with damaged beaks that survive and compensate very nicely. Even birds who have had their beak ripped off in a fight can recover.

Why not take a picture of the beak to a certified avian vet and get his or her opinion before you decide to buy this bird?

Good luck; I hope it isn't anything serious.

By bad beak, what do you mean? There are several types of beak deformities, some of which can be fixed and some that can't. Either way, with proper vet attention and good advice from your vet, they can go on to live full lives without complication.
