Well first off do it in person do NOT do it online, on AIM or any other messenger, myspace, facebook, texting.. those are all no's. Find him at a time his friends aren't around. If this is too hard to do, if you have a class with him and he goes to the bathroom or drink, leave a couple min after he does and 'run into him' in the hall.
