Pretty much, you need to use smart surfing. Know around the ballpark of how big the file is before you start looking for it. So many people try to hide a 1 KB virus in the skin of a big 3D game with special effects.
Make sure that you equipped with strong virus software. In the end, if you decide to use P2P software, you must be prepared for any problems that may happen to your computer.

I have been using Limewire for a long time already and I don't think I've ever gotten any serious viruses from it. Sometimes you will get trojans and minor bugs but usually AVG takes care of that when you try to open them. Also, Limewire warns you if a file is corrupted.

Recognize what a suspicious file will look like. Check to see if it's the right size it should be.
Limit your files from LimeWire to only mp3's, avi's, and mpg's. mp3 is the most common audio format, and avi and mpg are the most common video formats. Viruses won't come in these kinds of files.
Always have an anti-virus running on your computer. It will alert you of a virus as soon as it gets put on your computer -- and the virus doesn't hurt your computer just because it's on it. Viruses require the pc owner to execute the files before it can implant the virus. Most antiviruses have a "scan this file for viruses" command. Right-click the file you're suspicious of after you've downloaded it, and select "scan this file for viruses", and your antivirus will do that and report if there's any viruses in it.

I'd like to know how Limewire can "give viruses even if you don't use it." I really think that's impossible. I've used Limewire for years, download music weekly, and have never gotten a virus from Limewire. It isn't illegal and it isn't dangerous.
