Deborah C makes a good point. Usually patients with persistent depression/anxiety will have to try several different medications before they find the one that works best for them. Some people get lucky and respond well to the first drug they try. Everyone reacts differently to different meds. For me, Prozac and Zoloft gave me alot of anxiety, agitation and diarrhea. Paxil worked very well for me and I didn't experience side affects. I've talked to people that Prozac has worked very well for. Give it a try. If it doesn't work you can try another med or a different type of therapy. With most of these drugs it takes at least two weeks (and sometimes up to six weeks) to become fully effective. So hang in there. Depression and anxiety disorders are very treatable.

I think Prozac is the best for anxiety. I've tried them all.
It's non-addictive, meaning that you won't want to abuse it, i.e., take more than's been prescribed. However, I've tried going off it a few times and each time i've learned that the anxiety isn't cured, it's just being treated. I wind up going back on it.
The pros are, if this is the drug that works well for you chemically, then your depression and anxiety can basically go disappear. The cons are, there can be side effects such as sleepiness, weight gain, and sexual problems. I don't get these on prozac but do on other similar drugs.
Good luck, I think taking it has been a wise move for me.

Im a nurse and have been for 15 years I am a Prozac patient as well, prozac is an antidepressant and does not have addictive tendencys. Prozac however could have sexual sideeffects not that you cant preform but for women it has been known to cause them to have difficulty reaching orgasm. I like the effect mood wise that the prozac has in comparison to the other ssri or antidepressants. Every person is differant and some do better in some class drugs than in others. I know that it definately helps my mood and anxiety. good luck

I've tried a few different anti-depressants (I read that most people try about 7 different types before finding one that works for them, so don't give up if Prozac doesn't work for you) and did not find Prozac addictive. One of the benefits is that it appears to have few side affects, compared with some of the other types.
However, I found it really evened me out - no highs or lows - too much. It was great not feeling so low, but then I didn't feel very happy either.
I've been on Cipramil (citalopram hydrobromide) for about 5 years now, and it has been great for me. Very few side affects, and a generally good result.
Good luck! It won't hurt to give it a try, just remember it may not work for you.

My therapist recommended Prozac to take away my mood swings. In the end, I did not take the advice. Fundamentally, all psychic drugs have consequences. My reasons for not taking Prozac are that the therapist could not prove to me that I had some physical condition which was causing my mood swings, although she suggested that maybe I might have a chemistry imbalance in my brain. Unfortunately, my mood swings are caused by my own real life problems and not a problem in my head.
With this self diagnosis, I forever consider most shrinks either quacks, insufficiently experienced quickbucks or incompetent. I don't want to be a lab rat for someone's lack of experience. Somewhere in her medical training, didn't someone tell her, "FIRST, DO NO HARM!"
But, I don't really know your problems. Have you consulted another doctor, someone who might not be so quick to recommend meds. But, if you really are unable to function, then Prozac might be for you.
The other problem with Prozac is that getting off of it might be tough, in that the upcoming ride might be tough. Life is full of mishaps and even great joy. I need those great joys to get by. I am a sex addict. I am a thrill seeker. I can't go back to living a vanilla life and dressing in a white starch shirt. I'd be bored out of my mind.

prozac is in a class of meds call SSRIs. while they arent neccesarily " addictive", they are meant to be taken daily long term. of the ssris, i personally consider prozac and zoloft the best two. they both seem to help with a wide range of problems with limited side effects. do expect to have some side effects however. the most bothersome perhaps are the sexual ones( probably the least talked about but most common)
prozac has been on the market longest and is available in a very inexpensive generic. zoloft just became available in its first generic form a couple months ago in the US and the generic is about 10 percent savings from the brand name. so...if money/insurance is an issue...prozac would be the best drug to start with.
you may find yourself having to try several meds before you find the right one for you...so be prepared to be patient. but it certainly will be worth it to attain some peace.
all the best :)

Anti-depressants are not addicting. If your doctor recommended Prozac then take it. It takes about 2-4 weeks to get into your blood to work. Take it EVERY day. Do not come off it just because you think you feel better. You feel better because the medication is working.

I started taking Prozac about 10 months ago. I don't find it addictive at all, and it really has helped me.

It relies upon. is this healthcare expert a psychological well being expert or in basic terms your ordinary healthcare expert? considering you may see somebody in psychological well being. they are going to communicate over with you and along with your scientific historic past settle on which medicine to objective you on. do no longer provide up if the 1st one and/or dosage would not paintings. tell your healthcare expert and that they are going to the two alter the dose or substitute your medicine. that's very subject-loose. they are going to discover the suited one for you. i'm happy to hearken to you will seek for scientific care, besides. that's the main serious ingredient you're able to do. medicine won't restoration the subject--in basic terms scientific care can try this. the medicine is in basic terms meant to help get you by way of that.
