A restaurant with the real "flavor" of New York is Katz's Deli on Houston Street near Ludlow on the Lower East Side interesting area to walk through (note: we prounounce this Howz' ton not like the Texas city). There are two areas at Katz's - one is self-service and one is waiter service. Definitely sit in self-service - you go up to the counter, order your sandwich and, tip the counterman a dollar or two. He, then, will put much more meat in your sandwich than a waiter will bring you. (A few years ago several reporters went to Katz's with a small scale - some sat in waiter service and some sat in self service - all the self service sandwiches had at least a quarter of a pound more meat).
To add to the New York experience, drink a cream soda or celery tonic with your meal. Sandwiches are big enough to share - get an order of fries and you're all set. My favorite there is tongue and corned beef on a club roll.

Also try one of the old Irish Pubs for "New York flavor".

Try an ethnic restaurant that you don't have at home. Ninth Avenue in the West 40's and 50's and the East Village at First and Second Avenues below 14th Street have tons of good inexpensive ethnic restaurants. There are a couple of Tibetan restaurants in the East Village. Lucky Cheng on First Avenue and Houston Street is a lot of fun - the beautiful waitresses are all men. Try a Peruvian or Chilean or Argentinian restaurant. Walk around, read the menus in the window and try something completely different.

Have a wonderful time!

I don't think there's such a thing as "true authentic NYC food". NY is a melting pot so it really depends on what you're in the mood for. NYC has food from Afgan to Vietnamese and everything in between. Try http://www.menupages.com to find something that suits you. You can browse by cuisine to neighborhood to price and you can actually view the menu. To be absolutely sure you're not wasting your time, cross reference that restaurant with the Zagats. Have fun!

Carnegie deli: http://www.carnegiedeli.com/
http://www.borgoanticony.com/ very charming and comfortable
http://www.neronyc.com/media/nero.html... very nice easy atmosphere, great food

those second two are really good restaurants for a dinner as they have a casual but elegant nice atmosphere good indirect moody lighting and aren't overly pretentious or uncomfortable at all. Nice staff either place

Carnegie Deli, near Carnegie Hall.

If you've been in NYC for any amount of time, you have already learned this, but if not...BRING LOTS OF MONEY...THESE PLACES ARE NOT CHEAP.
