I know most Trinis refer to mulattos as "red" yet they also use the word "red" to classify people who are just "mixed" with different races but why is the word mulatto (half white, half black) so frown upon in Trinidad if that's the correct term?

ONLY Trinidadians please.

Is the term considered derogative?

Because the term is very foreign to the native people.

It is frowned upon because its nature is derragatory and because certain phrases or sayings have been used for a very long time in Trinidad that have derived their own meaning seperate from the meanings to the rest of the world.I think simply because mulatto has not been used generally in Trinidad it is derragatory but because no one says it no one can identify with it no one cares.

It's frowned upon everywhere, and should not be used. Its basis is essentially the word "mule," as in, half horse, half donkey. It's a terrible thing to call someone.
