Its a metaphor: Adam or the body was in the womb with the soul who is Eve. When they left the safety and relative steady state existence of the womb which is the garden of eden, they were thrust into the world of opposites where the intellect came to life and began to clothe them in knowledge. Actually the soul doesn't exist anywhere in time or space but it is associated with one body.
Can you imagine why any Prophet of God would tell people something so inane on the literal level and expect them to take it at all seriously on that basis? Yet people do take it literally even though they have never met a snake that talks except of course for the intellect which is well known to be symbolized by the snake. It is the brain of the fetus that secretes pitosin which is a hormone into the mothers blood stream and that begins the fetus' trip down the birth canal.
And so it is that the childs intellect or brain takes its first action to cause Adam, the body (masculine in nature) and Eve, the soul (feminine in nature) ejected into the world of the knowledge of good and evil. The unborn child knows nothing in the womb but its steady state existence and then of a sudden the poor little thing is out in the harsh light and the incredible darkness and everything in between, of the world of opposites. Thats enough right there to make you a little nuts. You are supposed to get over it though...you are human and designed to do even more incredible stuff after you launch yourself out of the womb.

I believe that they were wearing fig leaves and then stepped it up to clothing made from leaves and animal skins ( like loin clothes) or that's what we learned in CCD. something about God being angry that they were ashamed of their nudity.

God killed an animal because he requires blood for remission of sins, and with the skins, he (God) made clothes for them.
