Gum is not going to take that smell away. You can tell. If you smell it he did it.

If your 13 year old son is untrustworthy, and unsupervised, chances are you can just assume he's drank a can of beer and covered his breath with gum.
13 year olds should never be unsuprvised, especially with other children.

Gum is not going to take the smelly burbs that beer does to the body away. The carbonation will eventually make it's way back up and you will be able to smell it.

If you asked him and he said no, but you still think that he's lying you can borrow my technique. I have raised a couple of the worlds most devious, sneakie, liars in the midwest and picked up a few tricks along the way myself! When I suspected my teen of drinking and she denied it, we had 'the talk'. I told her about alcohol and the uses and abuses of it, yadda-yadda-yadda. I wanted them to know that as their parent, I was concerned about their safety and well being. So what kind of parent would I be if I didn't take the time to talk to them about it? Exactly...so this is what I ended up doing.
About a month later, one of the kids came home acting 'funny.' And as parents of teenagers know, there is a difference between acting normal funny and 'funny-funny.' So after out first talk, I went to my local pharamacy and purchased some litmus strips. All they are, is small strips of paper that test your levels of pH and other things in your urine. They have nothing to do with seeing if alcohol is in your system, but what the hey? They didn't know that....so in the door she walked acting 'funny' and I asked if she had been drinking. She denied it, as I knew she would. I then said, "Well good. Then you won't mind going into the bathroom and peeing on this strip of paper for me then." She asked me why and I said that I was just doing an experiment. I was watching the Learning Channel and was curious about urine in teenagers and was doing scientific research. She said that she didn't have to go to the bathroom, excuse after excuse. In the end, she did end up telling me the truth. All the water works and drama she could muster. We had a good heart to heart about it, and what I ended up learning was that it wasn't always so much about drinking that is the problem, it's about peer pressure and fitting in. Just get creative! Go nuts! Get off the fence and do something totally off the wall, and get them when they least expect it. It opens doors and walls of communication begin to crumble. Good luck....you got at least 5 more years to practice!

All Teen age boys try it one time or another, I did, I was 15 and worked at a Seafood Rest in Maryland and one night after work I got real drunk and my boss took me home to my foster mother, now keep in mind this was the 70's my foster mother heard me come in and asked me to join her at the table. I tried not to talk to her and she asked if I was drinking, I said no, then she asked me again, then I said it was non of her business ( The Alcohol talking ) then she said i got real nasty and my uncle came out and kicked my butt, the next morning she was making breakfast and i came down to the table with one hang over, she quietly came over to where i was and took a wooden spoon and a steal pot and commenced to beat that pot until it hurt in my head. I never took a drink after that until I was 19. Just talk to him and keep asking questions, he will either deny or admit it and his behavior can tell if he has. Mine did and I know the dangers of drinking and have been sober for nearly 24 years.

Well have you talked to him about drinking? What it can do? Or swap a story of yours that lead to a bad result? Or does your family allow underage family members to have a sip here or there so they know what it tastes like?
My family allowed me on special occasions and holidays to let me have sips or taste till I was about 16 then they allowed me one drink here and there (like a really bloody mary little vodka) SO it is just what your family situation is but defintely talk about it, not fight about it. :)
