Start out w/Oahu. At this time of year you can drive to the North Shore to see awesome waves, snorkel (but the water's a little cool) at Hanauma Bay, go to Pearl Harbor Memorial - EARLY in the a.m., check out the Dole Pineapple farm - really interesting, Waimea Valley - hiike to the waterfall. Go to the lookout - in the area of Hanauma Bay. Each of the islands has a different feel, but Oahu gives you a feeling of the State.

I've been to Hawaii twice first to Oahu, the 2nd time to Maui. Like the other person said, Oahu really gives you that feeling of Aloha. It's more urbanized, but still beautiful. You can circle the island and just pull over just about anywhere and the beaches are so beautiful. There's Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Polynesian Cultural Center, Hanuama Bay etc. In my opinion, the island of Maui offered more activities for me though I still love both islands equally. Maui is less urbanized and very easy to get around in with a rental car. Of course there's the beaches, there's the mystical Iao Velley, the sunrise at Mt. Haleakala (at the peak, it's very very cold you wouldn't even think you're in Hawaii like freezing temps, but worth it), the road to hana where you can see the hundreds of waterfalls, snorkelling, easy access to the islands of molokai and lanai. I was there in Aug. and I went parasailing and took an entire island helicopter ride. I also saw a show and went around the little towns on the foothills of Haleakala. What a beauty it was. I was also told the whales migrate there in winter and encounters w/ them are common during winters. There are many little towns to discover in Maui, and the activities are just countless for an enthusiast of any sort, whether it be arts, surfing, nature etc. etc. Best of luck and enjoy your trip.

It really depends on what you would like to do. If you are looking party sort of places, oahu is your best bet. they say that its overpopulated, but i have lived in honolulu for pretty much all my life and i believe that oahu has the perfect combination of natural beauty and modernization, allong with the nightlife of waikiki. go hiking at diamond head, explore waikiki, visit iolani palace (the real history of hawaii-totally fascinating) or drive arround the whole island. ive done that many times and its a great way to se all of the beaches as well as the different feelings of each sides. however, if you are looking for the way i would like to represent hawaii, i would choose the island of kauai. i lived in kauai for less than a year, and i miss it often. its easy-going, friendly and the people will treat you like family. the shopping is great, the food is original and the lifestyle of kauai is one that is definitely admired. kauai gives you the taste of the rural lifestyle in a slightly urbanized towns. i love the lighthouse because of the bird sanctuary, enjoy the prettiest beaches in the state, and drive the island to see the breathtaking sites. i think kauai is your best bet. if you want to go really rural, go to lanai. theres no cars here. just a few shuttles taking you to the cozy little town with a few stores and you five star hotel. deers? check. horseback riding? that too. i think that this island fits the outdoorsy type. its not all about honolulu. hope this helps!
