You are not wrong in your thoughts. The expression 'when in Rome do as the Romans' is quite meaningful. The shear idea to achieve a level of harmony is not only good for the person, it is great for society as a whole. The influx of so many so fast has begun to tear down the basics.

So by default, every immigrant and tourist, legal or otherwise, should be fluent in English before they are allowed to enter? Or we should outlaw the use of any language but English for the labeling of products?
Should we change the name of tortillas to something more American? Force all of the girls named Maria to use Mary instead?
This is such a non-issue.
The number of immigrants does not affect our language in this Country. Spanish is the second most spoken language in America, but it is a distant second.
As the amount of time a person spends in this country increases, so does their knowledge and use of the English language.
Immigrants come here with a prayer for a better life and usually not much else. How do they pay for the language lessons? They don't, they go out in our society and work through the language barriers.
Only in America do we think we should only speak one language. Nearly every other modern Nation requires multiple language classes in their education system.
If the products in the store have foreign label, don't buy them. If the menu in an ethnic restaurant is not in English don't eat there.
We are a Nation of immigrants. The American version of English contains a vast number of words from other languages. that is the beauty of our country. We take in foreign cultures and eventually they are consumed and Americanized. The result is a little different America, and greater cultural diversity for us to enjoy.
This is one of the most positive aspects of our nation. There needs to be no change to the system. It works and has been working for more than 200 years.

While I agree with the theory "When in Rome, do as the Romans do," I think it is worth noting that most people in other developed nations are bilingual or even multi-lingual. It's common for American tourists to find English speakers in Argentina, Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, etc. etc. Amercians should all learn other languages (not just Spanish) because learning just for the sake of learning is an amazing thing. Many other countries look down on us because we as a society do not feel the need to learn other languages or hear about other cultures.
We should look at this communication barrier as a reason to better ourselves, not as another reason to divide the country.

I totally agree with you. If I go to Mexico, I expect all the writing to be done in Spanish. The immigrants want us to cater to them and think it's wrong of us to expect them to speak English. And I don't see where illegals have any rights of any kind here.

Simple, America is a country built, by immigrants. Put in a clearer way, every one in America has roots out of that country. Their grandparents came from as far as England, Africa, Ireland, Spain, Latin America, etc... Probably the red Indians didnt. So you see on those forms questions like, "American descent.... please tick one" then so many boxes reading things like "African American, Jewish Americam, Spanish American...... etc..." No one is simply an American, but an American something.

America will soon become a predominantly Spanish speaking country. "New Mexico" will be comprised of all the U.S. states.
