I'm serious. It's bad! If he's sitting on the sofa you can smell it on the other side of the room. I can't ride in the car with him anymore, and when he talks his breath hurts my nose. Where can I get him some prescription gum, toothpaste, and/or mouthwash?
THIS IS AN EMERGENCY! My nose feels like it's about to start bleeding!!

Gum doesn't work! He will NOT go to the dentist, he hasn't seen a PCP in years!

Bad breath can be caused by gum disease or cavities. Discuss with your father when was the last time he had a dental app't. Inform him of the dangers of gum disease and such. You could also lead this into discussing how this would possibly help with his problem of bad breath. Be honest with him and let him know that "I'm sure you must have noticed how your mouth must have an awful taste all the time".. or such and then open it for discussion from there. I am sure he would probably like to know it is a sensitive subject and you don't want to hurt anyones feelings but think how you would feel. You might be a little hurt but in the end you would like to be told yourself I'm sure..
Good Luck with this.

Start with a professional cleaning and evaluation in your dental office. After that, you have to maintain your clean mouth at home.
Floss, brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, rinse with a mouthwash of your choice.
Avoid foods that make bad breath, like onions and garlic. If none of that helps, consult your doctor or dentist to see where the smell is coming from.If you do a search on the internet using "bad breath" as your search term, you will find almost five MILLION references. Here's a good place to start:
http://www.ada.org/public/topics/bad_breath.asp
The odors from garlic and onions enter your blood stream and then it takes a couple of DAYS before you breathe it all off. As you do this, you will continue to have bad breath. You can only use a mouthwash or breath mint (sugarless) as needed to mask the odor. I have read a lot of answers here saying to eat parsley to get rid of garlic breath, but I have no personal experience with this. Try it.

You gotta do it. You can do this in a loving way and you can let him know that you ONLY are telling him because you love him! Tell him that it is really difficult for you to mention this, but that you are sure that he would want to know AND that you think that there could be a health issue at work here. He will be able to see your concern and not a judgement if that is where you really approach him from. Good luck!

not sure how you'd break it to him, but you should; it could be anything from gingivitis to diabetes that's causing it:
"Bad breath may be the sign of a medical disorder, such as a local infection in the respiratory tract, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbance, liver or kidney ailment. If your dentist determines that your mouth is healthy, you may be referred to your family doctor or a specialist to determine the cause of bad breath."

Too late to get him a dental mouth pamper set for christmas so why not get it for new year gift or birthday or anninversary! traet him to toothpaste, mouthwash and a decent toothbrush or pay for his treatment at dentist. get leaflets on bad breath from the dentist.
or just tell him nicely that he has halitosis and explain to him what it means and how to deal with it.
my dad appreciated it when i told him, but it was because he was smoking and that was the cause

Go to health food store. Buy a bottle of liquid "Chlorophyll". 1 spoonful daily cures bad breath; foot odor; body odor...you NAME it!
Very healing to the human body, as well.
You just need to be upfront with him. Be gentle & gracious. And let him know when the chlorophyll is working. He'll appreciate it.

Just offer him a mint, and that should break the ice for your discussion. I would rather be told about this from someone I love, and would do whatever I could to solve the problem.

Encourage your father to see a dentist. Express concern that not having his teeth cleaned can cause gum disease and other problems.

Gee, just tell him. "Dad, your breath smells aweful" Urge him to go to the Dr. or Dentist and have it checked out. Usually really bad, bad breath is a sign of a health issue - or a hygene one.
