I currently have a puppy who is 11 months, i have the insurance from petsmart which is banfield.... for the first time ever (i have had a dog my whole life) the vet informs me that my pup has diarreha and vomiting due to a sore throat... i never had a dog who had a sore throat and he keeps getting them every 2-3 months... the medicine they gave him makes the dirareha worse in my opinion so i stop giving it to him and the matter seems to go a way. my mom thinks they are taking me for a ride... can someone give me some insight.... is the vet just misdiagonising or is there really a sore throat for pups

i told the vet the medicine made it worse... and the response they gave me was that it was an ANTI DIARRETIC so it was not suppose to do that and in sept he weighed 46 pounds and had a daily dose of 400 mg, the same medicine three months later was up to a daily dose of 1500 mg. i questioned them too and they siad because it was a persistent issue. i would try another vet but i have the insurance through them. i have always finished the medicine excpt for this last time where the situation was worse

Consult an independent vet. I had my cat treated at Petco once.. it was the worst experience of my life. I would never recommend a Petco or Petsmart after that horrible traumatic experience.

Find an independent vet -- ask your local shelter to refer you or ask the humane society.

Never heard of this before.

Before thinking the doc is a fraud get a second opinion and if he is telling the truth. Even though it makes your pups Diarreha worse keep giving him the meds until your supposed to stop. He might be getting sick because all the infection isn't getting out of his system. But since I've never heard of a dog getting a soar throat I'd go see a second vet and get his opinion

The medicine the vet gave you for the puppy is probably an antibiotic and vomiting and diarrhea are both common side effects of antibiotics. Stopping them will cause the infection that caused the sore throat to get worse and may lead to a super infection that will be more resistant to more antibiotics. In humans as well as animals, antibiotic therapy should never be stopped until the recommended dosage is complete. Inform the vet about the severity of the diarrhea and see if he can recommend something to ease it.

Mine had kennel cough when she was a puppy, which is a nasty raspy cough, but I've never heard of a sore throat causing all that. Have you tried telling the vet that the meds make the side effects worse? They can normally precribe something else.. or you could get a second opinion from another vet.

First try calling your vet and ask advise. Then I would get a second opinion! Something is still not right and I know you don't want to loose you puppy. I feel like she may also be dehydrated. Try giving her some Pedialite (the one for kids). Ice cubes are always a good treat. The cold will make her throat feel better and help with the dehydration. Then try lukewarm sodium-free broth. If she takes to this try giving her wet food mixed with a little broth.

Yeah i never heard of a puppy getting a sore throat either. I would go to another vet and have the puppy checked out. Get references from friends who like and know their vets. I love my vet. My fiance and i take our dog there, and so do all our friends and relatives. we just keep giving him referals and this helps keep his prices low---more patients! Good luck on this one!

Take the puppy back to the vet and tell them the medicine makes it worse.
