although you cannot physically change the way your memory operates to improve it, you can utilise techniques to make better use of what you got, most of which focus on creating more links between the things you wish to remember and also to things already stored in long term memory.

one such technique when having to remember say a list of objects, is to visualise yourself taking a walk around a location familiar to you eg your house, and placing a few objects around each room in a way that links them to it, for example the object "torch" might be visualised sat on the window ledge lighting up the room, or "rug" would be layed out on the floor, and so on. rehearsal of the route you walk beforehand is necessary but i hear some of the top 'memory' people use a tachnique like this.

one thing i do which is simpler is if i have to remember a list of things, i try and visualise them interacting with eachother in some way and create a story using them in my head, so when it comes to recall, all i gotta do is replay the story! obviously this wont work with plenty of words but its a start..

Eat lots of fish and play types of memory games. It's said that it helps people from getting Alzheimer's.

You can't really "increase" your memory, but rather you can IMPROVE it. Your memory isn't a capacity, rather more of a tool. Read the book http://www.amazon.com/Your-Memory-How-Works-Improve/dp/1569246297/sr=8-4/qid=1167182038/ref=pd_bbs_4/102-8988943-5056167?ie=UTF8&s=books
