And how do you introduce a family dog to it? I'm just scared that when we get this new cat and my dog and I come back from a walk and the cat is right there, that when I don't notice the cat I will let my dog go free off his leash and he will attack it or something.

to your first 3 questions, yes, yes, and yes.
introduce the dog slowly, make sure the cat has a place to run and hide if the dog scares it, and don't let them be unsupervised together til you're sure they are used to each other.

Cat really are great pets, more maintenance since you have the litter thing to worry about but other than that they're sweet, have amazing personalities, are cute no matter what age they are, really independent so they don't need constant attention or care, but very loving. Some cats like they're bellies rubbed some hate it, just depends and you can never really tell until you live w/ it. All dogs are different in their reactions to animals, sometimes it depends on the breed sometimes its just the personality of the dog. Most of my dogs avoid my cats, not that they hate them, they just leave them alone and do their own thing, other dogs I had loved the cats, they'd sleep together, chase each other etc. I have had some dogs who hated them, they'd bark, growl and eventually they get use to the cat. You need to find out how your dog reacts even if you dog barks at cats while you're walking doesn't mean he'll attack your cat at home. Make sure you let your dog know that the cat is now part of the household and what will happen if the dog chooses to not except the new member. We would throw our dog outside or in a room by himself until he realized that his behavior wasn't accepted. If we weren't around sometimes the dog would have a few scratches on his nose but cats can pretty much hold they're own, they seem to be much faster and smarter than dogs. Now they get along great, maybe it's just the fact that the dog gets jealous in the beginning. Either way I'm quite sure you'll be fine, good luck w/ your kitty search!

Keep the cat in a room for about a week with all the necessities and let the dog sniff at the door. Go and play with the kitty and every now and then, put the kitty in a carrier and let the dog examine the room and smell the kitty scent. Then, put the carrier down and allow the dog to smell the kitty while safely in the carrier. This way, neither of them will get hurt. If you make each step a positive one, they should get along fine. Never ever allow either of them to be aggressive towards one another. Water in a water bottle works great.....squirt them as soon as aggression starts. Do not allow your dog access to the cat outside the carrier unless you are supervising closely. Don't allow the dog to chase the cat and make sure the cat has a clear escape route in case a chase happens. If you supervise the introduction and allow it to happen slowly, then it should be ok. Part of it depends on your dogs breed too. If it sees your cat as prey then you might have issues. Good luck.

Introducing a cat to a household with animals, you should never just put them in the same room and wish for the best.

Set up a bathroom or bedroom for the cat, with all the necessities. Allow the dog & cat to sniff each other under the door, but for about a week, do not allow them to interact or see each other.
Then, introduce them, with the cat in a carrier for protection. Once your dog is ok with that, introduce them with the dog on a leash, and the cat walking around.

Cats are great pets. Some are loving, and others are more independent. Some like their stomachs rubbed, but most prefer not to be touched there.

If you adopt it from a friend that has a dog, it'll be fine. If not just introduce it slowly. If the dog barks, don't be frightened. He is just protecting his territory. If your dog has never lived with another animal he may become jealous and starting not going outside, if you know what I mean.

Cats are very loving, and loved to be loved. Some cats' bellies are sensitive and sometimes won't let you touch it, but most cat's love their belly rubbed. Cats are good pets, you don't need much maintenence. Just feed 'em, love 'em, and make sure you clean the litter box.

Cats are great pets. At least mine are. They are also very loving. I have one that loves to have its stomach petted. The rest do not like it so much. I've never had a problem with my cats and dogs, but I think it would depend on the dog and how aggressive it is now as far as cats are concerned, in general. Anytime I have owned both dogs and cats, they got along great.

Every dog and every cat are different. We've had some cats that got along with our dogs with out any problems. But some of our cats, they couldn't get along with the dogs.

Just slowly intoduce the two of them. Keep ahold of the cat/kitten and show the cat to the dog and be like "nice kitty", they soon will get to know one another.

Do you have any pals or kin that should scoop the field for you? i know this is a large accountability, despite the fact that this is barely used clutter which you won't be ready to be in touch with, no longer the kitty himself. i know i admire my pals and kin adequate that i could be extra suitable than happy to grant them that desire - this is barely for 9 months, and you ought to even destroy it up and have each and every prepared helper take an afternoon of the week or a week of the month or something to return in and show you how to out with the field. you ought to proceed something of his care your self. till you quite think of that he's suffering and must be positioned down for his very own convenience, i'm hoping you will seek for different techniques. remember that as quickly as the 9 months are over, you could resume finished care lower back!
