I live in an old house and the kitchen gets very cold at night. We noticed that the olive oil has a sort of a milky appearance to it, though it does not smell bad. Could it be that it is just too cold were we are storing it? Could we still use it? Also, the oil is not old. About three weeks old.

it can go bad, but not that quickly. it needs to be exposed to air and light for quite a while to Oxidize and go rancid. the cloudy appearance is natural when the oil gets cold--it doesnt mean anything.it just means that the oil is partially solidifying.it will return to normal after coming into average room temp.

the cold can definitely cause the oil to turn that way. if you want to use it for cooking, test it out. heat it up, if it heats normal, then fry a small piece of food and taste for wierd tastes. I don't really think you have anything to worry about, though, I've never had oil go bad on me or even heard about it going bad.

If it is milky it should return to normal at room tempurature. Any oil can go bad from oxidation. It will smell and taste bitter and does the same to food.

Olive should be kept in a cupboard, possibly on concrete where the temperature does not very too much.and it could take years to go of,or taste a little different. Most oils get a little white in cold weather.
