Most people want there to be just one belt, but they have to decide which one of the current belts to look at. Some people recognize only The Ring titlists as the true champions. Some prefer the belts from one of the other organizations such as the WBC, WBA, or IBF. Some people only recognize linear champions, but even that can be iffy and can leave long intervals with no champ. Some people decide they'll just start their own organizations to determine the real champion. Of course, that just adds to the number of belts out there.
Personally, I like being able to see who's at the top according to each organization. It leads to a lot of great debate about who the real champ is. Of course, you don't have to recognize anyone but a unified champion.

there are multiple belts per weightclass in order to help the ranking system within the division. the main title would be the championship, but different physical areas will have there own championships. for a rough outline, it could go district (part of a single state), state, regional (multiple states), national, international, then world, the number one spot.
this allows for the field to narrow down the closer you get to the top. there's only ever one world champ, who is the champion of the weightclass, and then there's the international champion, the number one contender. after that are a few national champions from different countries, then even more regional champs, and even more state and district champs. this essentially is for narrowing down the field of competition to make sure that only the best fighters make it to the top of the division. it also keeps the confusion down from having to remember a ranking for every fighter, instead you just have to remember the title, makes it easier on matchmakers, fans, trainers, fighters, everybody.

Don King controls the game. He who has the most money and fighters controls the game, or should I say makes the rules.

It would not be fair for a featherweight to fight a heavyweight. And we have to reward all of the weight classes.
