I already made a vet appointment for tomorrow morning and I'll know for sure when I take her to the vet; however I was curious to know if people have experience with dog ear infections and dog mites. Some symptoms, causes, etc.

My dog is scratching hear ear like crazy repeatedly and it's a bit red. I'm assuming based on that it could be an ear infection of some sort.

Thanks

Scratching the ear is one sign. If your dog is shaking his head a lot there is a good chance he has an ear infection. Also, if there is a strong odor coming from the infected ear.

A good way to tell is take a tissue and just gently rub the "infected" ear. If what you get is a dark color on the ear, very good chance it is infected.

I have a dog who is prone to a lot of ear infections. The sooner you get him to the vet, but happier the both of you will be.

Constant scratching is one symptom but also shaking head can be a symptom. It really depends on what is causeing it. If it is ear mites then there will be alot of dark spots in the ear that looks alot like dirt and the dog will probablly be scratching alot. If it's just an infection then the ear will have a dark yellow wax build up and probablly some discharge and the dog will usually shake it's head alot. There can many causes of infections just like for humans but dogs that swim alot tend to get them from nasty water settleing in the ear. So if your dog swims make sure afterwards you get a paper towel or something and try to dry them out as best you can.

My dog has ear infections now too. She was doing the same thing.. scratching/digging at her ears, and I began to notice, after a week that it was hard for her to hear me. I looked in her ears and they had some waxxy discharge as well. I took her to the vet and found out that they were so inflamed that they were swolen almost completely shut. It wasn't ear mites. Right around the change in season's like this, ear infections are very common I was told. The vet gave her an antibiotic shot, an anti-inflamatory shot, and home medications.. amoxicillan and some ear drops. My dog hates the ear drops haha.

You right, it sounds like an ear infection. I have two dogs and they used to get ear infections. It is very common. You can treat it yourself by purchasing a bottle of ear flushing lotion from the vet. Just flush the ears every other day for two weeks, then twice weekly. Just ask the vet to show you how to flush there ears. This saves me alot of money, the vet can be costly. After the ear infection is gone, make sure you flush the ears once a week. This will prevent them from getting ear infections and there ears will smell good.
