Basically it means that you can't have things your way in all ways all the time. With cakes, they are pretty to look at and show to your friends, but it is also nice to eat the cake... unfortunately, you can't both eat the cake and also keep it to show off to your friends later. If you eat the cake, you'll have to give up the chance to show off your cake to your friends later. That whole thing kind of sounds confusing because people usually say "have cake" to mean "eat cake"... a better example might be that you can't have money and spend it too.
In dating, it means basically the same thing... if you want to have all the nicer things that come from dating one special person, then you have to NOT date other people.
