My parakeet is getting older and his molting periods seem to get longer every time and more frequent. This time, his molting has lasted a few weeks. He is pretty sleepy and often has very watery bowel movements. (sorry, don't want to gross anyone out) One would think that he was just sick, but the reason I think he's molting is because he still has those "pins" on his head where feathers will grow in. Do older birds tend to do this? Are their bodies no longer capable of molting efficiently? I'm worried about my little buddy :(.

If he is eating then its OK, Get some molting food mix for him so he can fluff a little and control his molting. If that doesn't work then there is always food powder, and if THAT doesn't work then get him to a aiv vet and fast, cause it can be serious.

I'm no expert, but two symptoms jump out at me: he's sleepy and he has watery bowel movements.

Are you sure you're reading his sleepiness correctly? Is he actually sleeping or does he just stand there with his eyes closed. If he's doing the latter, he's in pain and needs help. Coupled with the watery bowel movements, he could have something very wrong with him.

I love Budgies but they are susceptible to so many avian diseases. You described two traits of a sick bird and I would take him to a vet immediately.

Take your baby to the vet. Yes, there are vets that do take care of birds (including parakeets). As for the molting...Go to walmart and get a container of " moulting/ conditional treat". I alternate this with my Hercules regular food.
May be what you are feeding your bird.
Still I would check with a qualified vet.
