Hi there.
If there isn't a specific special date, then that's a really good place to start! By having no date in mind, you won't be tied to a particular date that isn't really suitable (i.e. if February 10th is a 'special date' but you want to honeymoon in Thailand then of course you can, but you will be there during monsoon season!).
For your interest, I have attached a linkt to an article on a wedding website that tells you what you need to think about before setting a date - hope it helps.

If you aren't worried about a reception location, why not first pick a season when most of the ones you cherish will be less busy and more likely to attend your wedding? Then pick a date within that time period.
Or, find your reception place and know what dates are available. Ask those closest to you (the wedding party to be) when is the best for them. Go from there.
But make sure it is best for you, first.

Plan your date around the reception sites available. And since it typically takes a year to plan a wedding, you could choose the 1 year anniversary of the date that he proposed - I just got engaged (officially) yesterday myself and while I wanted to have it Sept 2007, I've decided to wait until my brother comes back from Iraq in Jan 2008. So that is how I chose my date. Good luck.

Find your location first!
You need to decide WHERE you want to get married first, then look at when that place is available. Especially if you don't have a date in mind. I would pick a general target like 6-8 months from now, depending on how much time you need to prepare and find a location that has some availability that time. Also the day of the week might matter to you as well.

First of all, I would recommend avoiding Feb. 29th. After that, try to stay away from times of the year when people are likely to be away or very busy, for example the weeks leading up to X-Mas or Thanksgiving or any national holiday where people are likely to schedule a vacation. Try to schedule at a time of year where it would not be uncomfortable or impractical to have outdoor wedding photos taken. So January in Alaska is definitely out. Finally, talk to a catering hall to see what times are the most popular and go for one that is less popular. It will be less expensive and facilities more readily available.

I have asked a young lady to marry me there are no dates that are "necessary to us" so we will be picking one that will suit the most people for attending the ceremony if there is no special date that you want it on no special numbers then do the same pick it when the weather is likely to be good travel is less expensive and the like make it as easy on everyone as you can hope that helps and congrats on tying the know hope I get to she hasn't exactly agreed just yet damn does that mean I am in trouble or what?

Pick a date that is far enough away from other significant dates that involve spending money so your other half has no excuses for not getting you an anniversary gift!
(i celebrate my 2nd wedding anniversary in 2 days......need i say more?!)

What do you fancy? A summer or winter wedding? Where are you going for the honeymoon? - destination might be better in summer than in winter. Once you've decided that pick a date.

You will need at a minimum 6 months to plan. My husband and I just looked at a calendar counted 6 months and picked a Saturday. That was seven years ago and two great kids later! Congrats on your upcoming vows! That is so cool!
