Are there bible verses somewhere that say (very loosely translated) "If you put things or people for God, He will take them away"? I don't think it is the "Thou shall have no other idols befor me" verse. I'm going crazy! Thank you.

No! Some preachers teach this without scriptual backing. However "seek first the kingdom og God and ......and all these things shall be added unto you" is a promise for putting god in His rightful place.

There is only one commandment with a promise and that is good - a long life ffor honoring parents.

God gives us good gifts. These include people as well as things (no, you don't end up owning someone). His gifts to us are "without repentence' ie He doesn't take them back.

However, if we put these things before Him it doesn't hurt Him it hurts us. ALL of His commandments are for our benefit, not His.

Treasure in heven is good but only if we can access it now. I like "Pie in the sky when I die" but I also want (and have the promise of) "steak on the plate while I wait" - read Deut 28.

Live by His law and get ALL these blessings.

Are you confusing this with a man can not serve two masters? There is no verse that says God will take away those you love.

Here is one possibility:

The gospel of Matthew:
6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Another from Job:
27:8 For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?

Exodus 20:3
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Read these 10 commandments in Exodus for yourself.

I don't know, but it sounds like it could possibly exist somewhere, and it doesn't sound unbelievable.
