For alot of different reasons. Most of all, it's to make themselves look good. Also, they don't want to get caught at doing something they shouldn't be doing. But it all catches up to them in the long run. If you lie, you have to keep remembering those lies. If you tell the truth, you just say what you're going to say and be done with it.

Most people lie to get attention about themselves by building themselves to higher level with a bit of extra added onto their lifestyle. I see it lots and I also hear it lots, even from people I have known for years and I feel like telling them it is BS, but what the heck they are only fooling themselves and few gullable listeners that just met him or her...
