I use to have your same problem and vain as it is, I have the answer. Get out your digital camera or maybe borrow one from a good friend, and set it to the selftimer. Keep taking pictures of yourself and you'll start to get into the habit of making the good poses and being comfortable in front of a camera. Having the timer allows you to get ready and relaxed like if someone were taking a picture of you. People always use to wonder why I would run when the camera came out but it's because they always did me a terrible injustice. This really has helped me and now when I see my picture I say "damn, look at me." :)

YOU should not do anything, it's the photographer's job to make you look nice on a picture!
Just for once, go to a studio, get one or several pictures of yourself, then compare the way the professionals work as compared to most amateurs.
You can also do free modelling for a beginner pro who has a studio.
When I shoot people (I'm an artist but not a professional photographer) or animals, I never take the shot while they are "posing". I always take a pic "impromptu", so I get a natural expression as vs. a posed one.
Look at children's pictures (I could send you some examples) or even at persons that are less photogenic, and compare. Then ask the "best" photographer to take your pic.
It's so easy to take a bad portrait, then blame the model !

I can usually light and pose a model or person to look better than they do in person. I some times make a picture a little taller so it seems the lady is a little slimmer. If I have access to a talented make up artist, we can make anybody look good. Don't know how you look to others. Lots of more talented photographers than me in the business. Also some pretty good videographers out there too. Don't think you can do any better than just meeting someone, and looking for yourself.

You need to practice your game face in the mirror. Maybe you are not aware of what you are doing with your face. Relax your facial muscles, tilt your head a little bit and have the photographer move to the side, not a head on shot. Make sure you look down just a little bit and don't feel like you have to have a big fake smile. It also helps to have someone with a digital camera take as many shots as possible. Odds are, one of them will turn out pretty good.

Most of us don't look good in pictures because we afraid of 'not looking good.' Being photogenic means having confidence. If you know you are going to get your picture taken, concentrate on thinking happy thoughts. Lift your head high, and smile like you just found out that someone you have a crush on also has a crush on you.

Have you tried wearing your favorites sunglasses? This is a foolproof system for me because at times when I dont have make up, I look like a corps on photos but with glasses, I look good or better if I dont.

Try tilting your head up slightly and turned to the right. It's a common photographer's advice.

Some my best photos are ones I took myself (avatar). If there's no on else around, I don't feel so self-conscious. Pictures other people take are usually horrible.

Some people just aren't photogenic and you may not be as hot as you think you are.
