There are long, long lines at the Empire State Building. The observatory at Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center is just as magical. I would recommend that over the Empire State Building.

Yes, but expect long lines. Also contrary to how it is shown on TV and in movies, there is no direct elevator to the top. You will take an elevator up several floors, exit, walk to another elevator and go up again. Provided that the visibility is good, you can see for ever, or just a few miles. I went last year about this time and visibility was 25 miles according to Empire State staff. Take a camera and maybe you can take turns with some other family in taking pictures of you and or your group. Good luck.

I work across the street from the Empire State Building and to me, it's okay I suppose. I mean I have never been all the way to the top (yes very odd since I was born and raised in NYC! lol) but I mean I guess it wouldn't be bad to visit and see what's out there. One thing I'll tell you though, I did try to go all the way to the top but the line was INSANE!!!! It was a weekend though. I heard that on the weekdays it's not like that, so I suggest that you should visit the building and go on a weekday!

Good Luck, and Happy Holidays :-)

Its one of the things that you HAVE to do once in your life.
But for a nicer place, try The Top Of the Rock. the Observation Deck on the 70th floor of 30 Rockefeller Center.

As long as you have clear skies, it is worth the trip. Just don't do it when it is cloudy or foggy because you won't see a thing.

Depends on the weather. Sunny and clear, yes, otherwise, no.
