"Natural selection" is the name of the process by which animals that are not fit for their environment are "deselected" or eliminated from their environment prior to reproduction, while those that are suited for their environment live past the age of reproduction.

"Survival of the fittest" describes the results of natural selection.

Just keep in mind that "the fittest" doesn't necessarily mean the animal or person that is the smartest, fastest, or healthiest, it just means that animal or person which best suits their environment at that point in time. Thus, attributes which might make an animal "fit" in one environment will make them "unfit" in another: for example, a person or animal with excess fat might be considered unhealthy in a tropical zone but would be better suited for a frigid arctic environment than an underweight person would.
