staying away from it 100% will only work for so long. The trick is to enjoy it in small portions and then making sure you work it off by walking, jogging, or at the gym. Any real sustainable weight loss must be done by enjoying things in moderation. I would suggest that you quit the soul food for like 2 weeks (this will help you with the weight loss but will also get to unaccustomed to the taste somewhat) and then re-introduce it in small portions balanced by exercise. This will help you partake of family meals but still attain your goals . By the way, all easier said than done. this will be like 95% will power. Good Luck!

I would suggest talking to your family and tell them what you are trying to do. That way they will be aware of it, might be able to help you by making some healthier versions of favorite meals and may even want to join you.
If this doesn't help, maybe you will need to remove yourself from the house at meal times where they are eating things that tempt you. Again explain to them the circumstances and reasons.
Good Luck.

I understand your situation, it is easy to struggle when the food is available. You have to set rules for yourself and gain great self control with your diet. Try buying the same food your family eats, but pre-portioned like 100-calorie snacks. There's nothing stopping you from exercise, so remember not to exclude it. If you let your family in with it, they could help you.
You may have seen her mentioned on yahoo somewhere:

Although I don't really agree with her artificial sugar recipes, she has great ideas to help.

How about eating it in moderation so you don't feel so deprived? You can always modify the food to make it healthier. ex. turkey instead of pork in the greens, frying the chicken in the oven instead of grease. Good luck girl..I know it will be hard. Just think of how good you will look when your clothes fit better.

My husband's family participants is from Georgia. My spouse's mom is the terrific Southern cook dinner there is, i'm beneficial. Southern nutrients and soul nutrients are especially almost a similar. i like all of it (different than grits). there is not greater effective nutrients in the international.

Your only option if you can't get away from the food is to start exercising. Every little bit helps. caffeine in moderation will help suppress your appetite
