Things have been really bad this year. This semester I bombed almost half my classes. Last year, I had the third highest GPA. I know that I haven't been happy in a really long time. It's like I don't even resemble the same person. I've always had "issues," but I never thought they could ruin everything.
I try to tell my parents something is wrong, but all they do is talk about how I must be failing because I'm always talking on the phone. And that's just not it.
I guess school doesn't seem to matter to me any more. I wanted to be a surgeon since I was seven, and now I don't have any idea what I'll do with my life. I don't even care if I'm even around then.
There is a history of mental illness in my family. But when I told my parents it might be a good idea to talk to someone, they freaked out. They told me I needed to talk to them. But I can't. And they think it's all in my head. How can I get help without them knowing? No hotlines.

does your school have a counseling center? that would be a good place to start. everything should be free and it should ALWAYS be confidential. if you talk to someone there and they suggest you see a psychiatrist or something, maybe then would be a good time to talk to your parents. but give the counseling center a try. i've used their services before as a starting point. they can be very helpful.

That's easy.
Go talk to a priest. It may take one or two tries to find one that you feel comfortable with, but priests are sworn to secrecy, they have training in counseling, they have really good connections, and they don't charge you by the hour like a shrink would.
Priests are just like regular people, some are grumpy and lousy counselors, others are great counselors, but all of them have extensive training in the field. If you aren't comfortable with the first one you talk to, or he can't help, or is a grump, ask him if he can direct you to one that does more youth counseling, or maybe to a psyclologist or psychiatrist that does pro bono work. Priests know shrinks, they work together a lot.
Most psychologists will do free or reduced price counseling, but there may be legal issues with them treating a minor without parental consent. A priest wouldn't have those sorts of problems.
That being said, you are rulling out two of your best possible resources because of your own pride, namely hotlines and your parents. That is sort of like being on the TITANIC and complaining that the lifeboat seats aren't comfortable! At some point you will need to talk to your parents about your problems and the "issues" you speak about. Solutions often require hard work and doing things we aren't comfortable with. You need to do WHAT IT TAKES to solve the problem, and that is not always what is comfortable or easy. (If the solution was easy it wouldn't be a probem now would it?)

I am not sure if your age will be a factor but, You need to talk to your counselor at school and explain to them just like you did on here about your issues and that if your parents found out you were talking to someone about them they would become worse. Issues will never get better unless you find out why they are issues in the first place. I am glad to listen if you need me to outside of answers.

Your school has call-in specialists for this type of thing and if you still feel uncomfortable, then walk into the local hospital and ask to speak to a mental health doctor. I would also recommend a trip to the Salvation Army where they can get you to speak with a counsellor and or a specialist that will direct you to a party where they can help you in discretion too.

Make an appointment to talk to a counselor at school and explain how you're feeling.
They can help you get through to your parents....and after they finish freaking out they'll help you because the bottom line is they love you.

Check with your school counselor or with a pastor in the area. Maybe talking to one of them would help. If they feel like you need more help than they can give, they can refer you to someone else.

Go see a counselor or a psychiatrist. They are bound by nondisclosure rules and if you're a legal adult, 18 and over, won't tell your parents anything.

If I were YOU, I would seek immediate help for your family and yourself. You will become a surgeon and help millions ONLY IF you help yourself first.... Speak to your Doctor, Teacher, a good friends parents....anyone in a position of authority ...
You have to do this now....Trust me, you will be all you want and more....MOVE NOW.

Try to find a EMDR counselor that works on a sliding scale. Look up EMDR on the web..it's incredible and very, very helpful. Then try to find someone in your area. Good luck.
