You should cut the shortest layer at least neck length if you want to keep it in a pony tail.

The shortest layer needs to be around mid-neck length in order to get ALL your hair into a ponytail. Otherwise you're going to need the help of bobby-pins, etc.

Most likely no shorter than your chin and that is cutting it close. I would go a little bit longer than the lowest point of your chin or jawline. Well, that is if the layers are in the front anyway, you should have no problem with layers in the back. Layers much shorter in the front than that might not look too great if you're intending to keep your current length for the cut you're getting. Layers will really help your thin hair look more voluminous. Good luck on your cut!

Why don't you put your hair in a ponytail and snip one little piece a bit below the rubberband. Measure it on the side of your head or neck and tell whoever is cutting your hair that you want that to be your SHORTEST layer.

Your hair has to be about at least mid neck length, and the shortest layers can't be shorter than the bottom of your ears. Otherwise you'll need bobby pins and things.

i don't have layered hair and i don't plan on getting layered hair anytime soon but my sister has layered hair and it looks very pretty on her. Her hair is about at shoulder length and she can put it up in a ponytail but it depends on how you are getting your hair layered. There are many styles of layered hair and they come at differents lengths so it depends on how your getting it cut.

the shortest cut you can get and still be able to make it into a ponytail would be under your ears. it would be a short ponytail though.
