You can't know without asking. And even with asking, you may not get an honest answer.

Some virgins will have a thin film of tissue covering the vaginal opening. The tissue, called hymen, will rip open the first time you stab into the vagina, and cause bleeding.
Keep in mind however, some girls have hymen that has perforations that have holes in them, or even a large hole in the center, making it so that there is little or no bleeding. Some girls don't have a hymen at all.
Finally, hymen is very fragile and may break with normal exercise or certain forms of physical activity or strain.
Otherwise, there is no way to be sure a girls is a virgin. If she doesn't know what she's doing, or she hesitant and afraid, that may also be a sign. Please keep in mind, it is NOT GOOD to try to go all the way if she's scared, try to assure her and use plenty of foreplay to be sure she's ready.
Let her explore and encourage her to take the lead.

You don't know and frankly you shouldn't care.
The past is in the past. It shouldn't matter what a girl has done as long as you know what she is doing.
If you like her, like her for who she is NOW instead of who she was in the past. Plus, if she has done some things with other guys in the past, it would only hurt you to ask her because that's not really something you need to hear, want to hear, or need to think about. It causes stress for you, her, and everyone else involved.
Either be with her now and don't worry about the past, or move on.

You don't, really. The best way is to bring it up casually. If you can't ask that, then neither of you are ready for a serious relationship yet.
Hymens can easily be broken, so saying that sex would be painful is just wrong.
Even girls who are young aren't virgins anymore. It's so sad.

Um...there isn't any other way that I know of...unless she has the words tattooed on her forehead "I am a virgin"...and I don't see that as a possibility.

Well, some women loose their hymen without having intercourse, so you can't tell that way. There isn't any definite way to tell short of a medical exam.
