it is for us all who believe the Bible and Gods words. it means to not make idols or pic. or anything of heaven or in the earth. and then worship it. some will say you cant even have them period others say it is ok but not to worship it. a lot of catholics have a pic of marry or what not and worship and pray to it. as well as other beliefs out there that have statues of gods and worship them. like pharoh and moses. moses had our God and pharoh had his gods. and when moses came down from the mt they made a calf of gold. that was wrong. but just ask God to reveal to you what he wants you to know and what he wants you to know what is meant. and read all scritpures as well. you might find your answere some place else.

A graven image was an Idol .It has been misconstrued by some to mean that you should not carve or paint or otherwise reproduce the likeness of anything for any purpose.It was an edict against idol worship even an idol of God.Martin Luther got bent out of shape over the Catholic churches use of images.

Idolatry A very common idol that people use to serve god is the cross.. they will kiss it as if its going to bring them closer to God and they will hold it when praying for the same reasons. When you go to a Catholic church(sorry not trying to pick any one out its just the first one that came to mind) have you ever noticed before you get on one knee what image is in front of you..
God doesn't like it when people use an image in worshiping him.

IT was written in the OLd Testament and is a part of Exodus 20
1And God spake all these words, saying, 2I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

These were commands given to the Jewish People that were written down by MOses probably as they were lost in the wilderness. HE (GOD) expected HIS people to continue to worship HIM and not images of animals or anything else. GOD was to respected and worshipped properly. He brought them out of Egypt and gave them everything that they needed yet they constantly took their eyes "off the prize" and did not worship as HE required them to do. This was HIS wake-up-call to them.

We live under a different set of Laws. They exist in the New Testament. Christ is our Savior and HE died so that we might have the opportunity to be with HIM in Heaven!

The people of israel where worshipping pagan idols without the understanding that God is spirit & there is but one God. This should not be confused with worshiping God Through some figure are person. God through moses was elevating humanity from a level of paganism to the awareness of God as spirit.

I think the carving of idols and things like that was popular and actually good for people at one point in time. That time has passed, and I think that's what the writer wanted to convey to the audience.
