That was attempted in the last century by several countries, the USSR (Russia), China, North Korea, North Vietnam, and Cuba to name a few. During the worst time in church history (the crusades in the 11th century that retook Jerusalem) a total of about 5 million people were killed. In the 20th century, the atheist countries killed at least 118 millions. That is a kill ratio victory of over 23:1 for atheism.

According to surveys, about 70% of the population of the world, outside of atheistic countries, believes in "God". So they are still in the majority. Further, after 70 years of atheism, in which an entire generation would have grown up with no religion, no Bibles, no sacred texts, no teaching about there being a "God", no churches or other places of worship, the Soviet Union collapsed in the late 80s. Within two years of that collapse, surveys showed that 70% of the Russia people had become theist. They believed in God.

There is a longing within the human to know God that is so strong, no society or culture will ever quiet it. So the elimination of religion will never happen. The famous mathematician Blaise Pascal put it so well when he wrote that "in every man there is a God shaped vacuum, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Him."

So according to history, if we stopped religion, there would not be peace on earth. Rather, it would be 23 times or more worst.

No, religion will never stop. And, it's not religion that causes all the bother. There are many other causes. God gave mankind freedom of choice. I don't think your point of view stands. Why do you think if religion was 'stopped' there would be peace on earth, if you 'feel that there are a lot more people out there who do not believe...' The world is a terrible place where evil rules, do you think that it is caused only by people who 'believe'? More bother comes from those who don't believe.

The statistics are that 95% of the USA believe in God, I am not sure what the UK is but it cant be more than 20 - 30%. The rest of the world however, especially Muslim countries are nearly 100% believers. So I regret I cannot agree with your first sentiment. However, if you were correct and people used reason instead of religious bigotry it MAY reduce the number of conflicts as we would all be singing from the same hymn sheet (to excuse the ironic religious reference). Unfortunately, that still leaves race, politics and nationalism to have wars over - so I would have to disagree.

I think that the religions will be revealed for the corrupt, dishonest organisations that they are very soon. When it happens, the world will be a much better place. Hopefully, all the churches will be raided and all the riches they hold returned to their rightful owners. The poor and needy could be helped with a lot of the money and goods that the churches have stolen over the years.

I dont think so, if you think religion is a lifestyle or belief that an excess amount of people follow. If we were to majority vote everything like the politions do were would we be look at the trouble they get us into. There would not be peace as obviously also then like anything else people would rebel and cause like an underworld of the outvoted.

as long as there are people, there will be conflicts...how, exactly, would you go about trying to 'stop religion via a majority'...what, a worldwide vote? are you serious? and where do you get your information about how many people 'believe'...i'd be very curious to see those figures...or is this something you have extrapolated from experience with your circle of acquaintances? maybe you need to get out more...hey, i've got an idea, how about after the 'no religion' vote, we repeal the law of gravity...i mean, all that up-down stuff can get really tiresome...

We can only dream of ending it.

Better education for the whole world would be a great step towards that goal - if there were less segregation and more knowledge for the children they'd see right through the divisive, superstitious rubbish in those so-called holy books and this would be a great world to live on.

No there wouldnt be peace though. Much of the conflicts described as religious are nothing of the sort - The great Islam verus Christianity deal is just about oil. Israel & Palestine is about land. The world might be a better place without religion but it would be naive to think it would be perfect.

No religion can't cease, do you get anything good out of non-religious countries? yes, in religious countries there may be war but that's only, really in the middle east. In non-religious countries it's not safe and it's all about alcohol, sex and drugs. And there will be a small percentage of athiest people who are good so people just have to learn to respect other religions...that's the day when there will be world peace. In my opinion the second coming of Jesus is the day of world peace.

Of a world population of 6.1 billion a total of 5.0 billion follow recognised religions. Atheism and agnosticism make up 1.1 billion people. Over 1 person in 3 is a Christian of some form and the are more Muslims than Atheists.

You would be wrong about the numbers, but religion is shrinking. I don't think that we will ever be completely free of it.

A good example is the guys who all killed themselves to go for the UFO ride in Hale Bopp. No amount of reason could stop this and they just banded together and no one even really knew what was coming. I think that eventually it will get pushed to small groups, but it won't ever go away.
