If the juice from the onions gets into your eyes, which can happen when you slice them, then that can cause problems. The juice contains sulfurous acid.

Edit: I've worked in restaurants before. If you're cutting the onions using a slicer, then the juices themselves fly into the air. It isn't just the release of gas from them. Wearing goggles or other protective wear is a good idea, if you're able to. Standing as far back from them when cutting them is a good idea, also.

People here answering don't have experience with cutting onions in bulk, like in a restaurant. You do get the juices going into the air and into your eyes, and there can be an adverse cumulative effect.

I'm an extra sensitive person to chopped onions...dunno why, even if my hubz chops onions in the house n' I enter home even 6 hours later my eyes burn so badly I have trouble sleeping....weird but after many different techniques here's what I do now which seems to help...I put the onion I'm about to chop in the freezer for 15-30 mins...(not to freeze them) or if I know I have chop onions for a certain dish, I'll put the onion in the fridge a day before.... while chopping the onion, I burn a candle n' I make sure I cut out the yellow hard part at one end of the onion (that has the most sulfur) n' I trash that n' the skin immediately, n' leave it outside the house even before I actually start the actual chopping oh n' i keep the onions halves face down on the cutting board

The burning is caused by a gas the onions give off. I've never heard of it causing long-term harm to eyes, but considering it's rather acidic it might be able to. Perhaps goggles when dealing with the onions wouldn't be a bad idea? Or cut them under running water to reduce the potential for the gas to reach your eyes.

Yes ! But in the USA, the onions are not very strong. In other countries, they are killer, but we do not have a dollar store around the corner to stop by and purchase a eye gear. So we smoke instead. Most American restaurant have ventilation's and AC. You are safe !

no. tears get the onion juices out. try to cut the onions length-wise first, because the onion cells are long, not short. that way, you won't release the gasses from the cells. then chop them as fast as you can into diced pieces. trust me, it works.

No, absolutely not. Try running them under water and using eye drops. Don't worry about any long term damage.
