tend to be quite airy fairy, as in believe anything, but atheists tend to be more grounded and realist? Just an observation.

They also tend to be quite preachy too, I get loads of preachy answers with God and religion quoted too. God!

That is because they are stupid enough to believe that they have a monopoly on truth based on a book written long ago by men who thought the world was flat and disease is caused by demons. Not only that, they believe it is a violation of their rights if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their superstitious beliefs down every ones throat. We just have to marginalize them, which may mean an all out war against institutionalized stupidity.

i think everyone is the same regardless of what banners they wave.

for instance you comment that religious people tend to be more preachy than atheists, and yet all i read here are reasons pro and con about religion in equal strength.

obviously both sides are preachy and annoying with no clear victor.

as for religious people being airy and atheists being more grounded in reality i disagree because our actions ultimately define us, not our words.

religious people go to work, laugh, cry, whatever...it's the same things i do and when i'm in their homes i see no difference between their struggle to be a human being and my own.

where i get offended in this debate is when someone who does not know someone else attacks the other's core beliefs.

if you are religious it doesn't offend me and i will never say anything negative about you. the same way i wouldn't say anything negative about you if you looked stupid in your favorite sweater.

i will tolerate those things in your character i disagree with because that is part of who and what you are, and i've got no business messing up your life by injecting my own beliefs into your psyche.

but, it is a two way street and i'm not opposed to throwing bibles at you if you're on my doorstep every morning with the "good news" and you won't let me sleep in!!!!

I think you would agree that it requires the ability to reason to come to the conclusion that the probability of a personal God is unlikely. That is the consensus of most scientists including Stephen Hawkin. Therefore it figures atheists will have to be realists to establish that they do not believe and are therefore atheist (some people seem to think we 'believe' in atheism as if it was a religion of its own!) rather than those who believe because there is something which irrationally tells them they must. There was even speculation about this being hardwired in the human psyche - a type of 'God gene' of sorts. I find it impossible to say 'it's truth' without having researched a subject first, and then if someone can provide hard evidence to unsettle my initial conclusion, I will withdraw my statement and amend it.
That is what makes an atheist so different to a believer who accepts purely on the basis of 'faith' (there is no 'truth' in the bible as the core part of it, i.e. the existence of God can not be substantiated) - it is just 'gut feel', and then they expect you to accept it too because they say so. Weird!

Interesting. I have found that generally there are six groups of people who answer religion questions.

1 - Fundamentalist Christians. They quote the Bible or make sweeping statements about the supposed Will Of God (which they claim to know).
2 - Fundamentalist Muslims. Fewer than the Christians that's for sure but very similar in approach.
3 - Haters. Basically these are Atheists who love to insult the beliefs of others. They like to make fun of people because they are insecure about themselves and think themselves better than people who are different to them. I bet less than 1 in 10 of them has regular sexual intercourse.
4 - Fundamentalist Atheists. Every bit as opinionated and as vocal as fundamentalists who believe in God. Usually ruder too. Often they claim to be Atheists but actually consider science to be a God of sorts which is actually a form of religion.
5 - Moderate people. These are people of any belief system who don't shove their opinions down other's throats. There are too few of these people.
6 - Exceptions. These include people with fundamentalist beliefs in less mainstream religions, people who study theology, agnostics and robots.

Anyway these are the main groups as I see them. Personally I do have religious beliefs that I have researched a lot. I have studied most major religions and also the main aspects of theology and religious philosophy. I have read a lot of religious texts ranging from the Bible and the Quran to "Beyond Good and Evil" and the Book of Enoch.

Actually, atheism is not the absence of religion....it is a type of it. With its own beliefs and behavior patterns.

Atheists are most of the time sarcastic and arrogant towards the beliefs of others, thinking that it is nonsense and ancient stupidity. But this is exactly what Christians thinks about Jews or Muslims and visa versa, but they expressed this arrogance and sarcasm in other ways.

And each religion people think that they are realistic and right and so on. So what's the difference between atheist and a Christians or a Jew or a Muslim?

The difference is in the form but not in the substance.

Because................

ATHEISM IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF RELIGION......IT IS A TYPE OF IT.

Well, it does not mean that all religions (including atheism) are wrong, there is one there :-) which is really from God and which is the only way to God. And guess what.....I am in that religion. This is the religion that submits to God himself and not to one of his prophets or nations he created.
And I tell you that we are most realistic.

The two things that I have noticed on Yahoo answers is the enormous amount of arrogance and the enormous amount of ignorance.

There are of course some excellent questions and answers but often you have to wade through a disproportionate volume of this arrogance and ignorance to find anything of quality.

This question , sadly, falls into the very criticism it makes, which is disappointing since it makes the questioner look ridiculous and rather destroys it's own argument.

Ah well, we keep looking...

poppycock observation. Atheists have become as preachy and in your face as those with any religion. They become just as derisive also oversensitive as the next person. A true non-believer really doesnt care one way or another, is indifferent. I havent heard an indifferent atheist here yet.

Hey now, I believe in "god", I think you need to clarify which god ;)
Of course, I don't believe in the monotheistic version of god, and I'm of the firm opinion that evolution is a fact.

I personally adore atheists.. not only grounded and realistic, but some of the most intelligent, educated people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

The xians only believe what their clergy tells them they can believe, which is that their bible is the holy word of god and therefor true, because it says so right there in their bible. If you don't believe them, they will gladly show you exactly where in the bible it says that the bible is true. Don't ask about the obvious inconsistancies and outright contradictions, though.

I have a book that says serpents can not open their mouths and speak Hebrew, and I know that this is true, because it says that this is a true book in the front pages...
