He's around 6-7 years old and a mutt. In the last two days he's refused to drink from his bowl, and won't even go near it. It hasn't been moved or changed, other than being refilled. He won't drink from any other bowls, but he will drink from my hand, so it's not the water.

I'm at a loss - help!

make sure that you clean it.

it may have some sort of chemical on the bottom, inside, or on the edges.

you never know.

if the problems keeps on, get a new bowl.

if that doesn't work , ask a vet.

He will not dehydrate himself unless there is a medical problem. If you live in the UK then ignore those who say it is rabies unless you have taken him abroad to a country that does have rabies in the last 6m! If he is healthy and well, bright.alert etc then see what happens and stop stressing him. My dog drinks very little and that is normal. Did something scary happen recently when he went to drink eg fireworks, loud bangs that would make him wary of approaching the bowl again? Does he try and go to it but back away , in which case move it and leave him to get on with it and do not watch/stare/see what he does. Your anxiety may be picked up by him and worry him more. You watch/worry about whether he'll drink and the only thing he'll notice is your stress about him going to the bowl

There may be some kind of odor in that area that he is catching but you can't smell yet. Is his food dish right next to it? And if so, is he having trouble eating out of it? I wonder also if something happened there that would have scared him. Like if there was a bug in there that may have bit him while he was drinking. Try moving his bowls to a different place and see what he does. I would like to think that he will drink from it when he gets thirsty enough. If this goes on for more than a week, you will need to consult a vet because he could become severely dehydrated.

It might be a back or neck injury. Try cleaning the bowl in hot water and washing up liquid, not in the dishwasher. And then rinse it well, refill it and put it on a box so he doesn't have to stretch down.
Try moving the bowl to see if its the location thats the problem. And try other bowls. You really need to get this sorted quickly.

Maybe he got spooked (loud noise, static electric shock, bee sting) last time he tried to drink from the bowl. It may also be that the bowl is giving off a bad taste or smell over time. I suggest getting a new bowl, fill it with fresh water, and place it in a place where he will see it. A dog will not dehydrate itself on purpose, so eventually he will go to it when he is thirsty enough. He may also just like it when you spoil him by letting him drink from your hand :)

Well in most cases the dog is not scared of the water as you said but he probably has had a bad experience with water bowls when he was little. Maybe he suddenly remembered that time when he had something happen to him.

Something or someone may have scared him whilst he was drinking out of it, have you had a lot of guests around.

Failing that something may have been put in the bowl, or the bowl is dirty.

I would buy him a new one and see how he gets on with it. Failing that I would take him to the Vet.

Hope he gets better soon.

If you were in a known rabies area or country then my first thought would be rabies but as he's drinking from your hand maybe he can smell something in or on his bowl that you're not aware of. Could it be the bowl has got old? Or has traces of algae or bits of mould around the dish? Buy a new one and see how he reacts with that.

Why do no longer you basically take the cooler water and positioned it in a known doggie bowl. i be attentive to this defeats the purpose of your watering setup, yet individually i do no longer blame Fido, and that i do no longer think of he's a wuss the two, he's clever adequate to be attentive to somethings no longer somewhat precise. If i did no longer be attentive to what a water cooler became and each and each time i wanted a drink it gurgles at me i could be leery too.

it could be the same thing that happened to my dog as he is going down for a drink from the bowl her tag on her collar used to hit the bowl and rattle this would scare her so much we had to resort to taking her collar off her when she was around the house
try watching him as he is drinking this may be the case also if he is using a metallic bowl the reflection sometimes scare dogs as they think it is another dog invading their territory
