Depends on whether your mom has a sinus infection, chronic sinusitis, polyps, allergies or a nasal obstruction. Other than Afrin nasal spray, which soon becomes addictive, there are no quick easy ways to solve any of the above problems. One good non-drug way to treat sinus blockage is by daily use of a Hydropulse nasal rinse system but this requires daily use.

Your mom's first step should be to go to a good ENT (ear, nose & throat Dr) and get a definitve diagnosis and possibly a sinus CT scan so you know exactly what the problem might be. Then you can start looking for solutions.

My entire family swears by Zicam (nasal spray). It really opens you up quickly and is long lasting. I used to have a problem with nasal sprays because they always burned my nostrils. This one doesn't. I would rather use this than go to a doctor any day! Best of luck to you!

I've known two people who had operations for a deviated septum. Neither could breathe any longer through their nose at all. Could this be it?
