As people have said Muslims have to view the moon in a certain phase and/or position to call a holiday.
You could say "Why not just use a lunar calendar?". However the Muslim civilisation has an ancient and great connection with Astronomy- hence ancient Muslims used the Moon and stars as their calendar, rather than the other way around.

That is a good question. Not too long ago, in the last ten years or so, they celebrated Ramadan on the wrong day. And yes the positions of the heavenly bodies are know in advance that is how people navigate.

We have to sight the moon, and that can be only done close to the exact date. That's done for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr

For we know not until the time is seen and by us doing this we wait for the owner ( Allahu ta'la) to announce things! Not us to even shame ourselves or assume as others do so readily!

They say they have to sight the moon. That's silly. Astronomy can tell them exactly where the moon will be years ahead if need be. The moon doesn't change. Its always right where it is predicted to be. Are they that dumb?

They are known.
Most Islamic calendars have preprinted dates on them.
But there have been known to be mistakes.
