Hey Wildwood,
You have been called to become the family historian, wheather by subconscious choice or ancestral spirit. So, start documenting your family tree.
Get some software to help you track all the information, see the sites below.
Also, here are some specific Cherokee sites and other Native American sites that will help you.
Use conventional methods as much as possible. Birth, death, marriage records. Interview all living relatives now! Before any information is lost. Get names, dates, locations, wills, pictures, stories, etc. You will find a new respect for your past.
Recently, a man named "Brother of the Otter" talked about his experience and now he is a Department of Natural Resources employee, giving demonstrations of Native skills. He felt that he became who he should be by doing this.
Learn all you can about Vital Records. Local records are cheaper than State records. Dawes Role is a great place to help you. Start with yourself, document your parents, (especially Dad), since he was in your dream. Then his parents, and theirs, each generation backwards.

Unfortunately, I have no Native American blood, but my great-grandmother has 'come to me' in dreams before as well. This has happened at all three of the major cross roads of my life. I believe that this is a great honor and am very impressed. I would find ways to carry out her wishes and keep your heritage alive.
If you happen to be skeptical that this is truly your grandmother, and just a dream, dreams are a link to the subconscious mind. Maybe something was mentioned of this relative when you were younger, and you remembered it without realizing it...but finding a way to keep your heritage alive is still a wonderful thing to do!
I wish you luck on this voyage.

there must be a special reason for her spirit to come to you. more then just rememberance, but reminding you of your own heritage. Don't let it die.. do some of the traditional things that were once done. make a bread that was made from an old family recipe. maybe do a drumming and thank her spirit for coming to you. and don't take your heritage for grantide. The Natural Ways of life are in your hands. that is the answer to your present situation.
