A degree in event management would be a handy thing.
But it is not necessary, many people start out at the bottom.
See if you can get a job in a firm doing anything at all; reception PA, just anything to get yourself in the business.
Then work your way up.
This gives you a chance to see if you actually like the work, many people have degrees and don't work in the field they studied.

I used to work at a high school and have helped many students with college decisions. There are 2 colleges that offer Event Planning as a bachelor degree that have housing available (more if you can commute or are looking for an associates degree or certificate). Brigham Young University in Utah Eastern Michigan University Other ideas for majors would be to major in Business Management, Floristry (flower design), Restaurant/Catering Management, Baking/Pastry Arts, Photography, or any other field relevant to weddings which would be helpful.

No, you do not need a degree; however, in order to be considered credible in the industry you should get a certification (by taking a few courses). The certification includes what to charge, how to manage the business, and how to deal with difficult situations. You should also become a member of a professional wedding planner or coordinator association.

Definitely not a degree but I took a correspondence course to become a wedding planner myself. If you're truly interested, look into the Association of Bridal Consultants and the courses they offer. If you are already working in a field that ties into weddings, you're one step ahead of some of the others out there. My background was the restaurants, banquet halls and hotels which my clients find invaluable. Here's the Association of Bridal Consultants website:

You don't have to have one, but there are degrees you could get that would probably help your career.
