It just looks like a big gob of mucus.
When she's getting ready to give birth, make an birthing area, lined with newspapers. She'll start scratching at them (to make a "nest"), and then just sit tight. It depends on the breed. We've had some that started at 9 at night and were still popping out puppies at 6 the next morning.
You don't have to do a whole lot other than help it come out, let her lick the membrane from its face - hopefully she will, or clear it if necessary. Place it where it can try to nurse. Offer her water, but she may not take it until much later. Make sure she has a warm area (more for the puppies' benefit than hers).
Good luck, enjoy - don't forget to take pictures!

dogs are only pregnant for two months and a mucus plug is a slimy substance that looks like snot and after it is passed it can be anywhere from a few hours to two days the dog will usually pick a favorite spot to nest in and when she does you should prepare bedding bcuz once her labor begins you cant move her so just keep a close eye on her
