I'm American. I come from the American Yahoo Answers, but I came here to ask you this question because when I went to Vancouver in the Summer (which is a gorgeous place), that alot of the Canadians there didn't like it when they got compared with Americans. I never compared them, but I have asked this to my Canadian friends and they said that Canada doesn't like being compared to US? Is this true?

~I don't mean to be rude by asking this question. If I am, then sorry :)

No different than all over the world. Depending on what you actually mean by compare.

Don't compare Scottish and Irish, English and Welsh or New Zealand and Australia. And Canada and US.

Have fun in Vancouver this summer.

Honestly, I think it's been like that for many decades....
(Like it was said before "hate" is very strong and unnecessary)

Canada is a mosaic of cultures and traditions.
America is a melting pot.

It's easy to compare the two because of proximity, language and society.
Yet they are different and prefer to be separate from one another because of national pride and their different (young) histories.

When travelling world wide... Canadians are usually well-liked (because they are perceived as easy going & polite) and Americans often get the reputation of being loud & demanding....It's what I've heard time & again in person and in the media.

I think it goes both ways.... just as any siblings wouldn't want to be compared to the other.... they are their own person just as each country is their own...

Canada is a fairly laid-back country. Each province and territory is different and special. The people are usually friendly and helpful.
But it has been noted by family in England, that quite a few Americans wear the Canadian Flag on their travel-packs or lapel when in the UK and Europe. I suppose that Canadians are better liked across the pond.
Hope you come back to Canada for a visit; learn to understand us. :) You're not rude.

I dont know if I would use the word "hate", but yes, most Canadians dislike being compared to Americans. We have our own national pride. Because in many aspects our people are alike; we like to focus on our differences rather than similarities. In many cases, Canadians do not agree with many American policies and this to be called "American" is a bit of a peeve.

first - I didn't know there was a difference between the Canadian and American forums. I am currently on with thousands of Americans and Canadians (more Americans I'm sure).

second - no - I don't much care to be compared with a person from the US.... but I think you are great people!

Like one said, its not a matter of "hate" just a matter of respect and knowing the difference--in my opinion, and to some extent Canadians are totally opposit to Americans--from politics to keeping church out of government. I dislike it when I was refered to at times as an "american" thought I know alot about the place--I been down there---lived there for a short time fro time to time--its really is a different world--yet the average american share some of the same values as the average Canadian: safe community, schools, taxes, peace etc......but its different in how we see the world out there---Canadians are not closed minded like alot of Americans--we are much more liberal in our ways--and very much more tolerate to people--and Canada doesn't have the big cultural, social and political baggage that America has---Canada evolved in relatively peaceful times, where the USA fought and exploded into their history: American rebellion of revolution, American civil war of north and south, long histoy of slavery, long history of segradation (the white and black of the south)--and Canadians know they were invaded by the USA (1812)--they know the USA didn't join Canada as our friends and good neighbours in both world war 1 and 2 until they had to--though we lived side by side in realatively peace---Canadians more now and ever don't trust the USA we see you more as bullies and demanding and unfair trade negotiators instead of "our friends and good neighbours"---times are a changing between us--and the majority of Canadians do like our country despite the big handsome guy down south---we do ok for a backwoods country LOL

Compared to? You can compare me to anyone you want - I don't mind. Do you mean mistaken for, or looped together with? that's a bit different. I don't want to be mistaken for someone I am not.

hate? maybe a bit too strong.

I think it is like any country. It's people have great pride in where they come from and who they are. Do Portuguese mind being called Spanish? Yes, they do. Do the Irish mind being called British? Oh yeah. Do Koreans mind being called Chinese? Yes.

It's all relative. :o)
